President Jacob Zuma says he has no power to stop investigation into any individuals.
This follows latest reports that the Hawks are investigating Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan and some former South African Revenue Services officials.
Speculation is also rife that Gordhan’s possible investigation is politically motivated.
Presidential spokesperson Dr Bongani Ngqulunga says the president has full confidence in the Finance Minister.
A group of 21 leading economic experts in South Africa have meanwhile called for an end to the continued harassment of Gordhan – warning that the fragile local economy cannot afford such antics.
The economists include leading Professors from Wits and UCT.
They say the sudden axing of Nhlanhla Nene by President Zuma late last year caused major damage to the economy.
Reports say Gordhan has been summoned by the Hawks and may face charges in relation to an investigation into the alleged ‘rogue spy unit’ at SARS.
However, the academics say the moves are clearly politically motivated and put the country’s welfare and especially that of poor people at risk.
