“Venus and Serena are going to shake up this world,” says Will Smith in the emotionally charged trailer for King Richard.
The actor plays Richard Williams, the father of the tennis champions in the upcoming film based on the true story.
“Compton, California was not the typical training ground for tennis champions, but Richard Williams has a plan. Sweeping drug needles off the rundown tennis court and bravely standing up to the gangs that claimed it as their turf, he tirelessly drills his daughters Venus and Serena on the finer points of the game that he has never played. Smashing through age-old barriers of race and class, Richard relentlessly strives to prove that his girls are worthy of a shot, know they are destined for greatness,” reads an official synopsis.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, the 52-year-old wrote: “One of the greatest honours as an actor is to be able to celebrate someone’s legacy while they’re still here creating it. I’ve gotten to do it a few times in my career playing @ceoofhappyness and @muhammadali, and every time it’s a fulfilling and expansive experience beyond compare.
“So now, I’m proud to show you all our first trailer for #KingRichard, the story of the man who introduced the world to @venuswilliams and @serenawilliams. The origin story for some real deal superheroes!”
