In an exclusive interview with Maria Shriver during her Facebook show, Architects of Change Live!, the mom shared that she sent her kids for counselling to deal with Beyoncé’s rising fame. The 64-year old says the counselling was to help Beyoncé (now 36) deal with the responsibility of being an older sister to Solange, who is five years her junior.
“It was tough because [Solange] was five years old, Beyoncé was this little superstar in our city and so I took them to counselling very early so that the counsellor could help Beyoncé be more sensitive to Solange, ’cause she couldn’t stand her for a minute,’” Tina explained.
“Beyoncé was really irritated, but it made her more sensitive to who her sister was and what she had to deal with because of her.”
In the interview Tina, who is now married to actor Richard Lawson, adds that she used to take Wednesdays off to just hang out with Solange.
“I felt that my mother liked my brother more, and she loved him more,” Tina explained. “I was really sensitive to it. So I had days that I devoted to [spending with Solange]. On Wednesdays I took off from work and that was Solange’s day, and she was a lot younger than Beyoncé.”
Tina, who used to design costumes for Destiny’s Child, added that the early childhood therapy helped create a stronger bond between the sisters, who in April stole the show at Coachella – or rather #Beychella.
“I wanted Beyoncé to be sensitive to the fact that Solange had to deal with being a little bit in her shadow and it made her way more sensitive and protective and they are still fiercely protective of each other.”
