Taylor Swift surprised fans on Thursday when she announced she’d be dropping a new album at midnight.
She wrote on Instagram: “Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore. Surprise.”
The Grammy Award-winning artist said she poured all her “whims, dreams, fears, and musings” into her new album. “Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed,” she said.
“My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with.”
At midnight on Friday, Taylor released folklore, which she recorded during isolation. The album features 16 brand new songs and a track with Bon Iver, with help from Aaron Dessner, Beth Garrabrant and of course, long-time friend and collaborator, Jack Antonoff.
She also shared a new video shortly after for track number 2, cardigan.
The song – and video for it – sees the singer return to a more classic, whimsical Taylor Swift sound.
The song lyrics, which accompany Taylor climbing into a piano and entering a magical world that soon turns dark as she finds herself holding onto her piano trying to stay afloat in choppy waters, are: “Vintage tee, brand new phone. High heels on cobblestones. When you are young, they assume you know nothing. Sequined smile, black lipstick, sensual politics. When you are young, they assume you know nothing. But I knew you, dancin’ in your Levi’s. Drunk under a streetlight, I knew you.”
Taylor finds her way back home in the video with the words: “And when I felt like I was an old cardigan, under someone’s bed. You put me on and said I was your favourite.
