The University of Nairobi senate has proposed drastic measures to reform the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).
The proposals were arrived at during a meeting held on April 27, where the senate recommended the appointment of a committee to review the SONU constitution.
“The goal of the proposed review is to make the student organization more accountable and more responsive to the needs of students and the University community,” UoN VC said in a statement on Tuesday evening.
Among the proposed changes include putting a term limit for executive positions so that many students can get opportunity to lead, reducing stakes involved or benefits to office bearers so as to reduce tension between the winning and losing candidates and reviewing the sources of finances to SONU and regulate the level of campaign expenses.

Other proposals include reducing the role of incumbent office bearers in the management of electoral process, introducing minimum qualifications for candidates in order to promote leadership with good academic and moral standing, reviewing the voting and tallying process, and reviewing membership and membership fees.
The move comes even as UoN re-opened after it was closed early last month following a series of riots and demonstrations by a section of students who protested the re-election of longest serving SONU leader Babu Owino.
33 students were expelled following the riots.
