Tanzania Clarifies Only Ban On Online TV Has Been Lifted

Hours after Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan lifted the ban on media outlets, Tanzania’s Chief Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa has clarified saying, “The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has directed that only Online TVs should be opened and NOT other media including newspapers banned in accordance with the law.”

 

On Tuesday, President Samia said, “I am told you revoked licenses of some media outlets, including some online television stations. You should lift the ban but tell them to follow the law and government guideline,” the president ordered the ministry.

The move was hailed as a positive future for press freedom in Tanzania, as Samia ordered the Information Ministry to lift the ban on media outlets mainly for criticizing the former government.

 

Speaking at the State House in the capital Dar-es-Salaam, Suluhu said that as long as the media respect law and guidelines, they will be allowed to operate.
