South Africa’s Thuso Mbedu Wins Big At Gotham Awards

The 31st annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on Monday in New York.

South Africa’s Thuso Mbedu tied for Outstanding Performance in a New Series for her portrayal of Cora in The Underground Railroad. The 30-year-old actor shares the title with Ethan Hawke in Showtimes’ The Good Lord Bird.

“Waking up to a bunch of missed calls from my manager and thinking I might have missed my pickup (for the first time in my life) only to be told about this great news.

“What a pleasant surprise. Tied with Mr Ethan Hawke. Thank you so much @thegotham It’s extremely humbling and encouraging,” Thuso captioned the announcement on Instagram.

Earlier this year, Thuso won the TV Breakout Star award forThe Underground Railroad at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, and will join Academy Award-winning actor Viola Davis in the upcoming feature film The Woman KingThe Woman King will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who most recently directed The Old Guard.
