Somali President Welcomes AU To Mediate Poll Crisis

Somalia on Monday welcomed the African Union (AU) to take a leading role in facilitating an election process in which ‘every citizen elects their representatives through free and fair elections.’

“All Somali stakeholders will actively participate in the dialogue on the future of our democracy.” President Farmaajo said.

“With regards to Somalia’s efforts to hold peaceful, inclusive and timely elections, my government welcomes the role of the AU in facilitating a Somali-led and Somali-owned engagement process that would lead to dialogue.”

He said this after holding a bilateral meeting with DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, who is also the current president of the AU.

Taking to Twitter, Tshisekedi said ‘The two Presidents discussed the importance of African solutions to African problems, and therefore, President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed welcomes the role of the AU facilitator.’

The leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral relations between their two countries.

Somalia’s parliament voted on April 12 to extend the mandate of the president by two years, to let the Horn of Africa nation prepare for direct elections.
