Abuja – Two kids escaped death in Cross River State on Friday after apparently being branded as witches.
The minors, residents of the Ikot-Abasi-Effiom community in the Akpabuyo LGA of the State, were rescued by operatives of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) following a tip-off.
The kids, aged seven and 10, were due to be lynched by members of the community following an allegation that they had allegedly attacked a family member in a dream and snatched the baby from her womb.
A church in the area, directed under the leadership of a prophet, bundled the children up in a bush before conniving to have them killed, Cross River Watchreports.
“They were battered and assaulted by some members of the family, leaving them with cuts and bruises all over their bodies,” Sundat Nta, an eyewitness, claimed.
James Ibor, BRCI secretary, has condemned the act, while confirming that the children have been transported to a Community Health Centre for safekeeping.
