The Famous Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi has reacted to claims that Fredrick Sagwe Onyancha, a suspect in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) corruption scandal, is his “rich neighbor” who flies a chopper “consistently.”
Be that as it may, a fact check uncovers that the chopper story is far-fetched.
The comedian, who lives in Green Park Estate, Athi River, said he was shocked to read about the story of Onyancha.
“I live at Green Park estate in Athi River, and I am quite shocked to read about Mr Onyancha’s story. Yes, I ranted about a man whose choppers produce noise that causes discomfort in the neighborhood, I am not sure if the same man is Mr Onyancha, though I usually see two choppers parked on a field located in the estate,”.
In February this year, Omondi took to social media where he claimed that the aircraft was interfering with tranquillity in the neighborhood.
“The man, who owns the choppers leaves quite early in the morning and returns in the evening. He flies the aircraft nearly on a daily basis. His home is located a few meters from mine,” said Omondi.
However, another neighbor says that he’s never seen the Onyancha fly in a chopper and the one people have been talking about is used by a pilot called Stephen Kruger (pictured below with his chopper), who actually parks it outside the estate.
According to the neighbor who sought anonymity, Omondi lives in Cluster 2 while Onyancha resides in Cluster 4, a distance of 1km.
Initially, Stephen used to park the black and yellow chopper near the estate developer’s offices but was forced to park it behind the estate’s perimeter wall after residents raised concerns about safety should the chopper crash into houses on take-off or landing.
However, there are still those who want it parked there arguing it increases the estate’s profile and therefore value.
In May, the pilot hit headlines after leaving devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa in Marsabit for a while to airlift a pregnant woman who has sustained gunshot wounds to hospital.
Onyancha, 39, was on Monday described by his friends as a “private man who loves the finer things in life”.
Those finer things include eight townhouses in the upmarket Green Park estate off the road to Mombasa at Athi River, where he lives with his young family.
A modern villa townhouse at the estate costs upwards of Sh35 million, according to the developer’s website.
