Operation ‘Ondoa Panya’ activists have notified police of planned demonstrations in Nyeri town where over 200 live rats will be used in protests.
The group national organizing coordinator, John Wamagata told police at Nyeri Central Police Station that the protests will be held within Nyeri town before heading to the County assembly in Ruring’u area.
The peaceful demonstration will start at Posta area before proceeding to Kimathi Street and later the Nyeri County Assembly at Ruring’u where they will dump the rats after airing their grievances over the alleged misuse of funds by the MCAs.
Operation ‘Ondoa Panya’ activists will carry the rats dangling on sticks protesting the proposal by the County assembly to build a KES 75 million health club.
They will be joined by local residents who have since welcomed the demos.
“I’m ready to come with my rats and join the protests. These MCAs are very selfish and greedy,” said John Maina, a resident of Chaka.
Wamagata said it is wrong for the MCAs to build such a luxury club when the County needs better infrastructure adding that police should offer them security during the event.
“We shall carry 200 rats around town. We have set rats traps in all markets so we can nab enough live rats. We don’t want dead rats,” Wamagata said.
He said they will also oppose plans to impeach Governor Nderitu Gachagua for leading the residents in opposing construction of the health club.
“The money should be sent to local youth saccos who can borrow it and start businesses. This will reduce unemployment and help many people, not just a few individuals,” Wamagata said.
