How Many People Have Died In Tigray Fighting?

It has been very hard to confirm details of the fighting in Ethiopia’s northern state of Tigray, but the Reuters news agency has contacted some military sources who have given approximate figures of the number of people who may have died.

It quotes a military official in Amhara state, which borders Tigray, as saying that almost 500 Tigrayan fighters died in clashes. Other security sources are cited as saying that hundreds in the Ethiopian army died defending a military base.

Reuters has not confirmed the figures.

A journalist from the AFP news agency has been travelling to the north to try and see what is going on and has tweeted that he had reached the town of Dansha in the west of Tigray, which was under the control of federal forces.
