The special representative of the United Nations Secretary General and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNIMISS), Ellen Margrethe Loj, has informed the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that she will step down at the end of November after serving for two years, a UN spokesperson told reporters on Friday.
Loj was appointed by the UN Secretary General in July 2014, beginning her duties in Juba in September 2014.
“She had planned to retire at the end of her current contract, which expired at the end of August this year, but chose to remain at the helm of the Mission in the wake of the July crisis until the situation could stabilize,” Dujarric said.
“She will continue to lead the Mission until the end of November,” the spokesperson said.
South Sudan in July suffered renewed violence in the capital as forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to former first vice president Riek Machar clashed.
Machar then fled the capital, prompting Kiir to replace him with Taban Deng as first vice president.
