Three civilians and also one Islamist shooters were killed during a car chase and shoot out in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Monday, police as well as witnesses stated.
2 civilians were killed during a drive-by shooting by Shabaab militants in main Mogadishu while a 3rd passed away when the car later exploded after police provided chase firing their weapons.
One Shabaab shooters was killed and also 2 even more are on the run, according to the police.
“A Shabaab shooter was killed by police after he killed a civilian . An additional civilian was killed after the vehicle the opponents were using is detonated,” stated police official Ibrahim Mohamed.
The third civilian victim died later of gunshot injuries.
The attackers’ car blew up near a market in the Yaqshid district of northern Mogadishu.
“I saw the dead bodies of a woman and one of the gunmen who was riding in the car. He was shot after exchanging fire with police. Their car exploded after they abandoned it during the fighting,” said witness Dahir Abdulaziz.
Somalia’s al-Qaeda aligned militants were pushed out of the capital in 2011 but continue to carry out attacks on military, political and civilian targets aimed at undermining the internationally-backed government.
