‘Black is King’ Marks Mary Twala’s Final On-screen Performance


TV personality Somizi Mhlongo says he is a “super proud son,” sharing with his followers that Beyoncé’s Black Is King was the last project his mother, Mary Twala, worked on.

The iconic actor died at age 80 on 4 July and had an illustrious career in film, TV and theatre, spanning over six decades.

“My mama’s last gig [sic],” Somizi tweeted, along with a clip from Beyoncé’s newest visual release.

 

Black Is King accompanies the album The Lion King: The Gift, which Beyoncé curated for Disney’s remake of the 1994 animated classic, The Lion King. 

“I remember MAMA ….SHE LIVES IN ME [sic],” he captioned a snippet from Black is King on Instagram.

The film will be available for streaming on Disney+ in the US from Friday, 31 July and will be aired on M-Net (DStv 101) on Saturday 2 August at 20:00. The MultiChoice Group will open M-Net to DStv Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access for two hours.

 

It will also be available for DStv Premium customers for 30 days on DStv Catch up.

Other South African stars featured alongside the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland and Pharrell Williams, are Connie Chiume, Nandi Madida, Nyaniso Dzedze and Warren Masemola.

“What an honour working with her on this project! Forever inspired,” Nandi shared with Somizi on Instagram.
