Student leaders at the University of Nairobi have been asked to conduct themselves with decorum so as to protect the image of the institution.
The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Student Affairs Isaac Mbeche said the behaviour of the representatives of the learners, has an effect on the public perception of the institution.
Prof Mbeche who spoke Thursday during an orientation workshop for newly elected Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU), challenged the leaders to emulate the good record of their predecessors.
“Past SONU leaders and alumni dominate all the spheres of leadership landscape in the country and across the globe. You have a duty to jealously guard the University’s brand and leave a lasting legacy like your predecessors,” explained Mbeche.
“Leadership is not about what you get, but service to the students who elected you into office. You should discharge your mandate with passion,” he added.
The University Dean of Students Dr Fr Dominic Wamugunda, urged the new leaders to prioritize the needs of those who sent them to office, noting that they will be remembered for diligently serving their colleagues.
The student leaders at the workshop were updates about the various reforms that have been put in place at the premier learning institution in the country that include a comprehensive solution to the insecurity problem at the university and a mentorship program.
Prof Jane Mariara, the acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Research, Production and Extension) has been mandated to head the comprehensive security solution reform program , while Prof James Kimenju, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Dean is in-charge of the mentorship program.
UoN was closed down last month after the students went on strike, protesting results of elections, where Babu Owino was controversially re-elected as the chairperson of SONU for the fourth term.
The University after the strike later expelled 33 students including union leader contender Mike Jacobs over violence and destruction of property that occurred at the institution, following the contested elections
