Uganda: Artiste Richard Bona To Headlining The Johnnie Walker Jazz Safari In Uganda


 

To mark the eleventh release of the recently marked Jonnie Walker Jazz and Soul Safari, organisers have chosen to toss not one show like has been the situation for as far back as decade, however two shows.

This was reported at a press dispatch held at Club Guvnor on Friday night. Talking at the dispatch, prime supporter Elijah Kitaka said for the current year is all in regards to multiplying the a good time for jazz darlings.

“Uganda’s premier jazz offering this year is about doubling the fun for jazz lovers, which is why we are doing two separate festivals,” he said, revealing that American Grammy award-winning musician Richard Bona will be headlining the Johnnie Walker Jazz Safari on Saturday June 30 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

A Soul edition will then take place in December with details being released later. Previously dubbed the Nile Gold Jazz Safari, the highly anticipated concert has seen an impressive list of international superstars stop in Kampala for a jazzy night of partying.

And this year will be no different, headlined by Bona. Born Bona Pinder Yayumayalolo in Minta, Cameroon, into a family of musicians, Bona’s music journey started at the age of five playing the balafon at his village church.

He moved to Douala, a coastal city in southwest Cameroon, and later to Germany and France before eventually settling in New York, USA in 1995.

His 2002 album Speaking Of Now took home the Grammy award for best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 45th Grammys.

Bona sings mostly in his native Douala, but the vulnerability of his plaintive sound is unmistakable across barriers of language.

He has played with big names such as Manu Dibango, Salif Keita, Jacques Higelin and Didier Lockwood.

George Benson, Chaka Khan, Harry Belafonte and John Legend also form the long list of musicians he has worked with on different projects.

Joining the American star on stage will be the cream of local jazz music, including Kaz Kasozi, BlackRoots UNLIMITED featuring TShaka Mayanja, Michael Kitanda, Tony Trumpet and Aloysious Migadde.

Tickets to the event will go for Shs 130, 000 this year, while a table of 10 will be available for Shs 3m. Other partners include Stanbic bank, Guvnor and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
