Johannesburg – Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of acting Inkosi Hendrick Phiwayinkosi Mahlawula on December 12 2014.

KwaZulu-Natal police traced the suspects, aged 33 and 38, to a prison where they were already serving sentences for other crimes, said Major Thulani Zwane in a statement.

The duo were in a prison in Umlazi.

The shooting happened when Mahlawula was on his way home and travelling through the Mabuyeni area, Esikhaleni, with two passengers in his Toyota Hilux.

Police allege the suspects were travelling in a VW Golf when they opened fire. Mahlawula’s passengers were not harmed.

According to Zwane the provincial task team was assigned to the case. They finally made a breakthrough after a year-long investigation.

The two men will appear in the Esikhaleni Magistrate’s court on Thursday on a charge of murder.
