FORMER Attorney General of Rivers State, Chief Okechukwu Wali, was yesterday elected as the 26th National President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with a total vote of 688 to defeat Emeka Ngige who got 449 votes while Blessing Ukiri secured two votes.
Announcing the results at about 8: 30 p.m. in Abuja last night, the chairman of the Electoral Committee, Prince Lanke Odogiyan also declared Emeka Obegolu as the General Secretary with 527 votes to beat E.A. Haruna and O.O. Olowookere who polled 322 and 292 votes respectively.
The post of the 1st Vice President was won by O.J Erabor with 372 votes while that of the 3rd Vice president went to Francis Ekwere with 734 votes.
Also the post of Assistant General Secretary went to U.F.O Nnemeka with 507 votes while the position of the Welfare Secretary was won by Kelvin Ezelonu with 600 votes.
The post of the treasurer went to Joyce Odu who polled 929 votes while Afam Obi was elected as the Publicity Secretary with 626 votes.
Delivering his acceptance speech on behalf of other elected officers, Wali urged Nigeria to emulate NBA in conduct of transparent election and smooth transition from one regime to another.
He called on legal practitioners to cooperate with the new executive council so as to make the association a better one.
Earlier, the outgoing president of the association, Joe Bodunrin Daudu, had called on the newly elected officers to be faithful to their campaign promises. The swearing in comes up on August 31
