Palpable fear gripped Ezza North Local Council of Ebonyi State after unknown gunmen operating on motorbikes attacked the Local Government Chairman Ikeuwa Omebe on Sunday.

Also attacked by the same men of the underworld was the leader of the legislative arm of the Local Government, Daniel Nweke.

According to eyewitness
accounts, the duo were returning from a neighbouring Local Government area where they had attended the wedding of the chairman’s driver when the hoodlums steered their motorcycles close to the approaching Toyota Avensis official car of Omebe and fired sporadically wounding the occupants.

“The gunmen
were about five and appeared to have been lying in wait for the council
chairman,” a source said,

“The hoodlums did not know that the chairman was the man behind the wheels, so they concentrated on the back seat where he usually sits,” he continued.

However, the chairman sustained injuries on his back while the leader (councilor) received multiple injuries at the back and buttocks.

The State Police Commissioner Adeola Adeniyi confirmed the report and that
investigations had begun to track down the culprits.
