The wife of a monarch in Ondo State of Nigeria was on Thursday arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Supare-Akoko, Ondo State, South-West of Nigeria charged with engaging in a public brawl.
The accused, Serifat Adedeji is the wife of the monarch of Supare-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government, Oba Kasali Adedeji. Supare is the homestead of the incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, Ali Olanusi.
Serifat was accused of fighting publicly with another woman, co-accused Comfort Awogbami on May 4, this year thereby causing a breach of the peace and bringing the traditional institution into disrepute.
When the case was mentioned, Police Prosecutor Steven Dickson said he would call four witnesses to testify against the accused persons and that he was ready to go on with the case.
But the counsel to both parties asked for more time to study the case. Presiding magistrate Bunmi Olujuyigbe adjourned the case to June 7 for definite hearing.
Meanwhile, counsel to co-accused Dorcas Adonis has petitioned the police over the charge alleging that the monarch should have been charged with attempted rape of his client.
His petition read in part: “On 4th May, 2012 between 7:30 to 8pm at Ugbe Street, Supare-Akoko, a place rented by the Kabiyesi (Monarch) for his wife – Olori Serifat Adedeji, the Kabiyesi invited our client for clarification of an allegation of illicit affairs between our client’s husband and the Olori (i.e. monarch;s wife).
It continued: “In a twist of an event, the Kabiyesi excused all other people in the house except our client whom he took to a private room and forcibly attempted to rape her; in the struggle, our client escaped the assault but had her dresses torn.
“Our client was taken to the state General Hospital , Iwaro-Oka for medical attention and the matter was reported at the Police Station Supare-Akoko for investigation. To our client’s consternation, her matter was left unattended to and no investigation was carried out. At the end of the day, our client and the Olori were charged to court for affray.”
The counsel asked the police to investigate the case properly and make sure that the culprits were charged to court with the appropriate offence,” he concluded.
