Kano State “Hisbah Command” on Tuesday gave out the first set of 100 widows and divorcees to husbands at a colourful ceremony which took place in the precints of the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
However, this is just a tip of the iceberg as there are still over 900 “eligible” wives to be given out on behalf of the state government before the end of the year. Indeed, Kano State is reported to have well over one million widows and divorcees.
The initiative was part of the efforts of Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso’s administration to transform the lives of women and the Kano society in general by reducing the number of “single parents and loose women.”
“Many wealthy individuals supported the event and we are sure that the pilot marriage will pave way for more support from the public,” he said.
The Deputy Commander of the Sharia enforcement outfit, Dr. Yakubu Kachako expressed optimism that the new couples would live happily ever after. He urged the new couples to apply the lessons learnt from the training they had earlier received from the board to observe their marital duties and obligations.
Billionaire businessman, Alhaji Isyaku Rabi’u was said to have paid the bride price of N1 million for the 100 brides on behalf of the bridegrooms. The bride price on each of the newly wed was N10,000.
The state government also gave each of the bridegrooms a sum of N20,000 and a set of furniture to enable them use it as a seed capital set up their own businesses and earn a living.
