The Federal Government of Nigeria has reached advanced stage in the process of concession major roads in the country through Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. This was disclosed by Arc. Mike Onolememen, Minister of Works at a workshop organized by the Senate Committee on Works in Abuja.
The Minister listed the roads as Apapa-Oshodi-Murtala Muhammed Airport Road, Lagos; the Second Niger Bridge in Delta and Anambra States and the Nupeko Bridge in Niger State. He stated that the PPP would ensure that major construction companies rehabilitate and construct roads across the country, free funds for the Federal Government to execute other pressing projects and accelerate the much need infrastructural development in the country,
adding that a number of firms from foreign countries have indicated interest in investing in Nigerian roads.
The Minister disclosed that a number of foreign firms investors from USA, France, China, Egypt, among others, have indicated interest to invest in Nigerian roads.
He said: “Three important projects, the Apapa (Oshodi)-Murtala Muhammed Airport Road, Lagos; the Second Niger Bridge in Delta and Anambra states and the Nupeko Bridge in Niger State, have been earmarked for execution through the PPP-funding model.
“Appreciable responses have been received from local and international investors in response to the advertisement by the ministry in December 2011 for expression of interest by consultants wishing to act as Transaction Advisors and would-be concessionaires.
“The final stages of the selection of successful transaction advisors and commissionaires are ongoing. Many more projects under the PPP funding model are being prepared for procurement as the Outline Business Case (OBC) for each of them has been recently completed.”
Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Senator Eze, had lamented the poor state of infrastructure in Nigeria, adding that the situation was a sad commentary on the developmental strides and potentials of the country.
