The Afican Union has suspended Guinea-Bissau from its fold following the military coup that toppled the democratically-elected government in the country last week.

This verdict was handed down on Tuesday by the continent’s highest decision-making body and took immediate effect. The order would remain in force until the military junta returns the country “to constitutional order.”

Meanwhile, the sub-regional body – ECOWAS – said it had almost reached a consensus with the coup leaders in resolving the country’s political logjam.
