Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants have shot dead a 92-year-old Islamic cleric , Alhaji Goni Mustapha, in his residence in Gwange, Maiduguri, Borno State of Nigeria.
According to Mallam Ibrahim Sulaiman, a relation of the deceased who spoke with reporters in Maiduguri on Wednesday, the gunmen invaded the home of the victim around 7.30 pm on Tuesday and shot him at close range.
“About four gunmen invaded his home in the evening shortly after prayers. They divided themselves into two groups. The first group went in to kill the cleric while the other group kept vigil at the entrance. They met him inside his compound and shot him several times before fleeing in different directions.”
The PRO of Borno State Police Command, Samuel Tizhe, confirmed the incident and solicited the cooperation of the public in giving vital information to the police.
The victim has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
